Don’t get caught out: how to spot an energy scam


We’ve all heard the horror stories — scam calls, suspicious emails, and fraudsters posing as energy companies to trick you into handing over personal or bank details. And while we’d love to believe it won’t happen to us, scammers are getting smarter — and more convincing.

Red flags to watch out for
Scammers love to pretend they’re from an energy company. So, here’s our quick guide on what to look out for (and what to do if something feels a bit… off).
1. They pressure you to act immediately
If someone calls or knocks and demands you “act now or lose your supply” — take a step back. Legit companies (like us!) will never rush you or use scare tactics.
2. They ask for personal or banking details
We will never call or email out of the blue to ask for your:

Bank details
-
Card numbers
-
Full address (we already have it)

National Insurance number
If they do? Big red flag.
3. The number or email looks odd
Scammers often use email addresses that are close (but not quite right) or call from a withheld or unfamiliar number. If in doubt, hang up and call the official number listed on the company’s website.
4. Too-good-to-be-true offers — with a twist
We do offer genuine perks like free credit through surveys or competitions — but we’ll never ask for sensitive info in return or rush you into clicking suspicious links. If a message feels off, especially if it promises big rewards with no context, it’s worth a second look. Scammers often use urgency and unrealistic offers to trick people.

Double-check everything
If you’re unsure whether a message or call is real, contact your energy provider using the details on their website. We won’t be offended — we’d rather you be safe.

Don’t click links in unexpected emails or texts
Even if it looks like it’s from us.Go directly to the website instead of clicking anything.

Ask for ID
If someone shows up at your door claiming to be from an energy company, ask to see official ID. Still unsure? Tell them you’re calling the company to check before letting them in.

Use strong, unique passwords
Especially for your online energy account. Don’t share login details with anyone.

Talk to someone you trust
If something feels wrong — pause. Ask a friend, family member or neighbour. Two brains are better than one.
